|-----DELACOUR, Clémence
| Naissance: 18 septembre 1855 à , , , France Décès: 12 juin 1929 à Glendale, Californie, Etats-Unis Inhumation: Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., Californie, , États-Unis d'Amérique Note Emile Viault immigrated from France in 1873 (at age 17). There is no indication that he came with any other family members. After searching only readily available transcribed passenger lists, have been unable to locate him on any manifests[this has not been an exhaustive search]. Emile may have come to North America through Canada -- there were Viaults in Canada at the time (according to land records). However it happened, through friends, family, or alone -- he ended up in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota. On November 22, 1878, Emile Viault both applied for a license and married Malvina Pumalo (see her notes about last name) in Minnesota and their first son was born the next year on September 10, 1879 in Medina Hennepin Co., MN. Emile, Malvina, and baby Max are listed on the 1880 US Census in Plymouth Township, Hennepin Co., MN, living with her parents [another clue that he had no family in Minnesota]. Emile lists himself on this Census with the occupation "miller," however he did not turn up in a search of early membership records (1880-1900) of the Minnesota Grain Exchange (then the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce). Historically, Minneapo lis became the flour milling capital of the world by around 1885. So this was "the" place for a miller to be. Nevertheless, no connection to any of the great milling concerns has been established. Further, while seven of their eight children were born in Minnesota over a 13-year period, almost no trace of their presence in the Minneapolis area was discovered. The exceptions are the 1880 US Census mentioned above, and in two disparate entries in Minneapolis business directories for the years 1882-1883 and 1884-1885. According to the listing, in 1882 Emile worked for a Mr. Werth as a clerk in a clothing store. The address listed, 89 8th Avenue, NE was a business address.

|-----ROSALIE,
| Naissance: 22 novembre 1860 à Minneapolis, Hennepin County., Minnesota, États-Unis d'Amérique Décès: 15 décembre 1957 à Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., Californie, , États-Unis d'Amérique Note According to the 1900 Census (taken in June), Malvina's birthdate is November 22, 1861. Her listed age, however, is 39 which would make her birthdate November 22, 1860. This is likely correct especially considering that she was married on N ovember 22, 1878 -- her 18th birthday and the legal age to marry in Hennipin County (according to the affidavit on the the license). California Death Records also lists Malvina's birthdate as November 22, 1860. Her maiden name, however, is listed as Ponerleau. The marriage license distinctly spells her maiden name Pumalo -- though she herself was not required to fill any thing our or sign it. A clerk filled it out and Emile signed it.The California Death records (from death certificates?) are unreliable, first, because the deceased, again, did not fill it out for herself. Secondly, for each of her sons, who show up on the same list, every single one of them spell her ma iden name differently. How goofy is that? During a research trip to Minnesota (April 2002) I had hoped to find (specifically) her birth certificate. This was not possible because no records of any kind were kept by Hennipin County prior to 1866. The next best choice was Maxine's bi rth certificate (as my great grandfather and her first born). However, it was also not recorded. In fact, birth certificates were not available for any of the children. There is an index of birth records for Minneapolis for the years 1870-1899 (Minneapolis is treated separately from the rest of the towns in Hennipin County) none of the seven children purportedly born in Minnesota are in this Birth Index. However, there were two initially very confusing anomalies.According to the notation in the 1900 US Census, Malvina was reported as having eight living children out of eight births. And, right there on the same census form, those eight children are listed. They are: Maxine, 1879; Georgia, 1881; Rosalie, 1882; Francis, 1885; Alberto, 1887; Arthur, 1889; Ellen, 1892; and Theodore, 1899 (born in AZ). Further confirmation is the family portrait which appears to be taken nearly simultaneously with the Census. Eight living children; eight children on the Census; eight children in the photo. So, the two children who WERE listed in the Minneapolis Birth Index mentioned previously are anomalies because they shouldn't have been there. They were David A. C. Viault, born March 10, 1884 (father--Emil; mother -- Delia) and William A.Viault, born January 8, 1985 (father--Emil; mother--Malvina C.) This is a mystery within a mystery because, first: Who is Delia? Emile's mistress? This seems unlikely though certainly possible {see the notes on Emile; this was the time peri od where he was apparently living and working in Minneapolis in a candy store). And what of the second child listed in the Index, William? How does he fit into the scheme? My hypothesis is now the "Delia" is a transcribing error and that the child -- David A. C. Viault -- was Malvina and Emile's fourth child and second son and they named him David after her father;* that the child William A. Viault was the tw in brother of Francis William** -- both born January 8, 1885; and that the REASON they were both listed in the Birth Index was because they needed to record the deaths of these children. And,lastly, that when it came to the Census information in 1900, they (?) did not tell the truth which was that Malvina had eight living children out of 10 births. *Rosalie is her mother's name and I would be willing to bet that Emile's parents were Maxine and Georgia. **Francis may have got his middle name due to the death of his twin, William. Malvina's maiden name is really unknown, having seen variations including: Ponerleau, Pomerleau, Pumerleau, Pomale, Pamerlo, Pomerou, Pomery... Malvina was American, born in Minnesota of Canadian parents.
